Robert Henry Ruck

Robert Henry Ruck  1898 – 1950

Robert was born circa 1898 in Paddock Wood, to parents Sidney William and Mary Ann Ruth (née Athawes).

In the 1911 Census, the family was living at 4 Whittington Terrace, with Sidney described as a carpenter. They lived here until at least 1918, according to the Dover Directories.

Although Robert’s War records have not been confirmed, it is likely that he was a sapper in the Royal Engineers, service no. 167972.

In 1919, he was admitted to the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, Cabinetmakers and Joiners union, citing five years’ experience. He also married in the same year, to Catherine Irene Jacob, in the Dover district.

The 1939 Register showed him living in Southampton, working as a carpenter and joiner. Catherine and his children were living at Carpenter’s House, Chilham Castle, Kent.

He died in Southampton in 1950, aged 52, with Catherine surviving him by 30 years.
