Hubert Sidney Pudwell

Hubert Sidney Pudwell  1900 – 1979

Hubert was born in Faringdon on 10th July 1900, to Jesse and Lily Eliza (née Dunn). Richard Higgs states that he was known as Herbert. There are no records found to date to explain Hubert’s connection to the village, although the family were living in Nonington in 1911 and it is possible that Hubert worked in Shepherdswell.

Hubert joined the Royal Navy in July 1918, service no. J89517, giving his occupation as chauffeur. He was 5’ 8” tall, with auburn hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion. He served on Powerful, Vivid I and Centaur.

On 4th March 1925, he married Muriel Beryl Smith in Peshawar, India, and by 1936, he was a mechanical engineer. Records show the family travelling to Bombay. In 1940, they had moved to Glen Davies, New South Wales, where he worked for National Oil Prop. Ltd., Mines and Refineries.

He died on 11th June 1979, with his ashes interred in the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, Matraville, Randwick City, New South Wales.
