Herbert Charles Amos

Herbert Charles Amos 1887 – 1968

Herbert was the youngest of the 3 sons of parents Joseph Robert and Esther (née Bean). He was born on 14th January 1887 in Shepherdswell and baptised on 2nd March. Joseph was a butcher and by 1901, aged 14, Herbert, known as Bert, was already working for him. The family lived in Botolph Street in 1891, Bridge Street in 1901 and Botolph Street again in 1911.

In 1912, Bert married Eva May Hoare in Faversham, and they set up home at 2 Hillside, Church Hill. They do not appear to have had any children.

Although it has not been possible to determine War records conclusively for Bert, there was an article in the Dover Express in January 1920 which stated that he was the “last of the Shepherdswell boys to return”, having had 3½ years in Mesopotamia and the Holy Land, and had visited Jerusalem.

He returned to his trade on his return home and remained at 2 Hillside until around 1928, when he moved to The Chestnuts to continue his father’s business. The 1939 Register shows him as a butchers shop keeper.

At his death on 20th November 1968, aged 81, he was living at Melville, Cox Hill.
