Charles was the 2nd child of Frederick Solomon, a gardener, and Eliza Jane (née Kember), and was born in River on 29th January 1891.

The 1901 Census showed the family living in River, but by 1901, they had moved to Hazling Dane in Shepherdswell. In 1911, Charles was listed as a gardener, boarding at 8 Cossington Road in Canterbury, aged 20.

He married Phoebe Flora Polhill of Dover at the Salem Baptist Chapel in Dover on 18th May 1915, before leaving only two days later to join the Motor Transport Service, according to the Dover Express.
