We need your support!
Joining the History Society doesn’t just give you the benefit of FREE entry to our regular presentations throughout the year. You will also be supporting the valuable projects the Society undertakes to research and record the rich past of both Shepherdswell, Coldred and the surrounding area and make it available for current and future generations.
Here are some of the projects that we are working on:
-
- The Graveyard Project – inspecting and recording all of the graves in St Andrew’s grave yard and comparing them to the vestry records. Many of the graves are overgrown and many of the records are incomplete or inaccurate. The eventual record will provide an accurate source for anyone wishing to search for loved ones in future.
- Archiving Project – we have a wealth of photographic and printed information of people and places from the village going back to the late 19th / early 20th century. This information is being digitised and annotated and will eventually be available via the website for all to see and use for any family research.
- Three Barrows Down – these bronze age burial barrows, adjacent to the North Downs Way off Long Lane, are extremely rare and at risk of being lost for ever. The History Society has been at the forefront of establishing the Friends of Three Barrows Down, a separate organisation devoted to restoring and conserving this unique treasure.
- War Memorial Project – for the 100 year anniversary of the First World War, the History Society undertook to research all those villages who served in both the 1st and 2nd world wars. These individuals are all now remembered by plaques located in the village hall and more details about their lives can be found on this website by clicking here.
All of these projects, and many more, are undertaken by History Society volunteers and your membership subscription goes towards supporting these and many other projects.
