Mabel Ward

Mabel Ward  1897 – 1979

Mabel was the fifth and youngest child of Frederick Solomon and Eliza Jane (née Kember), born in Shepherdswell on 4th March 1897. She lived at Hazling Dane with the family, with her father working as a domestic gardener.

Mabel became a member of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps which later became Queen Mary’s Auxiliary Corps, but no War records have been found to date.

Following the War, Mabel married Albert John Ruck in Shepherdswell on Boxing Day 1919. He had also served in the War. The best man was Mabel’s oldest brother, Frederick James Ward, and a reception was held at Yewcroft Villa, Church Hill. Mabel and Albert moved to Dover and lived in Garibalde (sic) Road, producing six children.
