George Arbuckle

George Arbuckle 1894 – 1965

George was born on 1st June 1894, somewhere in England.

A birth registration has not been found however the 1901 Census gives his place of birth as England. His parents were Archibald and Emma (maiden name unknown). Archibald was a miner, as were at least two of his oldest sons. There were at least six known siblings, and most were born in Lanarkshire in Scotland where Arbuckle is a more common surname.

To date, no record of the family has been found in 1911 but by 1915, Archibald had moved the family to Shepherdswell, probably to work in the new mines that were opening in Kent.

The available War records for men with the name George Arbuckle do not provide enough detail to conclusively be sure which one is correct.

In the 2nd quarter of 1918, George married Esther Berry in the Dover district. Newspapers suggest that they settled in Eythorne, and they had at least 7 children between 1921 and 1938. The 1939 Register showed that George was working as a colliery hewer underground. His probate record shows that he died at 4 Langdown Place, Chapel Hill, Eythorne on 6th February 1965, at the age of 69, leaving Esther as a widow.
