Charles Edward Ward

Charles Edward Ward  1891 – 1948

Charles was the 2nd child of Frederick Solomon, a gardener, and Eliza Jane (née Kember), and was born in River on 29th January 1891. 

The 1901 Census showed the family living in River, but by 1901, they had moved to Hazling Dane in Shepherdswell. In 1911, Charles was listed as a gardener, boarding at 8 Cossington Road in Canterbury, aged 20. 

He married Phoebe Flora Polhill of Dover at the Salem Baptist Chapel in Dover on 18th May 1915, before leaving only two days later to join the Motor Transport Service, according to the Dover Express.

His War records have proved impossible to confirm to date, using known information.

By 1939, Charles was working as a chauffeur and gardener, living in West Malling with his wife and son, who had been born in 1928. When he died on 23rd February 1948 at Brome House in the High Street at West Malling, his home was given as “Dunelm Police station-road West Malling”.
