Special Meeting – Three Barrows Down

Wednesday, November 24th 2021 – Shepherdswell Village Hall at 7.30pm

Three Barrows Down is an ancient burial site situated on the North Downs Way, on the boundaries of Shepherdswell, Womenswold and Nonington.

The burial mounds are amongst the most well-preserved still extant in Kent, a visible and evocative remnant of Kent’s prehistoric past. The site has been described by archaeologists as Kent’s ‘Forgotten Archaeological Gem’.

Unfortunately the barrows have become overgrown and are under threat from off-road vehicles. The site also lacks any visible interpretation that would educate and inform passers-by.

For the past two years the History Society has been actively working with the landowner, interested local people, organisations and experts from across East Kent and nationally to develop a long-term project that will protect, conserve and make this important monument more visible.

Come along to the Shepherdswell Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 24th to hear ANDREW RICHARDSON, one of Kent’s leading archaeologists, talk about the history of the burial site.

The meeting will also launch Friends of Three Barrows Down, which will be open to all who would like to participate at any level in this important work.
